City of Lakes Loppet

February 3, 2011

Have you been to the City of Lakes Loppet in the past? Well this is the year to do it! It’s a fun (and mostly free) event to take your family (or your date!) to. The City of Lakes Loppet is Saturday and Sunday, Feb 5-6 in Uptown near the Lakes. There are lots of things to do and see.

And guess what? It’s supposed to be in the 30s this weekend, a great excuse to get out and enjoy the MN winter. The City of Lakes Loppet is gearing up for the biggest and best weekend ever with around 11,000 participants!

Here are 4 of the 16 events going on on throughout the weekend:

  • Snow Sculpture Contest. Take the kids or your honey to the Mall in Uptown where teams have 4.5 hours to sculpt a prize wining idea out of a 4′ x 4′ x 8′ block of snow. It’s always fun to see what they come up with! FREE to view/ 8am – 12.30. Judging at 12:30.
  • Chuck & Don’s Skijoring Loppet. Skiers AND their dogs ski around Lake of the Isles and finish in uptown. I’ve gone the past few years to view this event and it’s amazing to see… young and old participate in this event. FREE to view/ race starts at 1:30.
  • Luminary Loppet. This ski race around Lake of the Isles is illuminated by 1,000s of lit up ice sculptures. A pretty sight to see on a fun date night! Join the participants at the Tent Party at the Mall in Uptown afterwards for a live band and refreshments. FREE to view/ $10 cover to the Tent Party which starts at 9pm.
  • MN Youth Ski League SuperCarnival. Ski games for the whole family… games, relays, obstacle course AND PRIZES!  Located near the finish line and snow sculptures at the Mall in Uptown. FREE/ Saturday 1:30-3:15 and Sunday 11-1.
