tips for your home office

February 8, 2012

These tips are good to keep in mind for your desk in your home office or even your desk at work. They are tips and guides from the principles of feng shui. Over many, many years fen shui has helped to create balance and restore creativity, wealth, relationships and more.

Use these tips and guides to re-engergize your workspace:

  • Sit in your chair and look at your desk. What do you see? The objects that you see should be inspiring and not cluttering. The top of your desk is the key to your creativity.
  • De-clutter; if pictures of family and friends inspire you take one picture and set it on your desk. You can rotate it out with others, but multiple pictures on your desk can cause distractions instead of inspirations.
  • Instead of piling things; file things! This might be easier said than done, but filed items are out of your way and they clear space on your desk and your mind.
  • Look at your desk through the eyes of a special client. Have only purposeful and inspiring objects on your desk that speak to you and to the people that will meet you at your office.

Pay attention to the wealth corner of your desk. Take a look at the feng shui map above. All spaces in feng shui are set up and managed according to this map. It applies to whole houses, to rooms, even to pieces of furniture. If you're sitting at your desk; the top left corner would be your wealth corner. Make sure to put purposeful things in each section. For example; you wouldn't want an old plant or dirty coffee cups cluttering up your wealth corner.

office update

November 16, 2011

Speaking of wallpaper

This spring we helped a client out with her in-home office. Previously the walls were bright white and textured and the light wool carpet was starting to show wear and tear, so it needed at update.

We found some pretty wallpaper from the KDR Showroom and new wool carpet from Intersource, both wonderful showrooms at IMS.

This home office space went from drab to fab with the help of hauthaus!

Here’s a snapshot of the before and after!!

Before and after of a home office re-design in St. Paul.

By adding a medium tone-on-tone wallpaper to the walls and  wool carpeting a shade richer on the floors, this office has a new, different, cozy feel.

On the wall opposite of the desk is a new love seat, so while someone is working at the desk, one of the kids can be curled up on the love seat reading or working on homework.

Tip: One way to transform the look and feel of a space is to use wallpaper. There are endless different options, from barely there and subtle to in your face wild, and from textured to smooth.

design tips: vol. 3

September 30, 2010

Greetings to all!

It’s time for another installment of our hauthaus design tips for your home!

FRONT ENTRY TIP:  A bright, colorful console or coat rack, a favorite piece of artwork and/or  fresh flowers will energize your entry and express who you are.

Your home should welcome you at the front step and project your design style with gusto!  Make a statement and make sure it carries through from one room to the next.

HOME OFFICE TIP:  Be sure to have the supplies you use regularly organized and in abundance.  A well stocked home office and a comfortable desk chair will encourage you to go in and sit down for a bit.

Task lighting and a paper recycling bin or shredder will make you even more efficient at managing your correspondences.

FAMILY ROOM TIP:  Make this gathering space purposeful.  Are there games nearby?  Cozy blankets within reach and stain resistant fabric on the sofa?  Coasters and good reading material close by?

The TV doesn’t have to be the only source of entertainment.  If there are alternatives handy, like a deck of cards, they will likely be used!
