in detail: designing custom furniture

July 28, 2009

Custom furniture is a great way to bring your personal concept and tastes into your home. When you decide to go with custom furniture in your design, the options are truly endless! You can choose the specifics of everything from fabric, to cushion fill, to the stain of the wood, and more.

PLAN We recently designed a custom sofa sectional for a couple’s kitchen remodel in Minneapolis. Their kitchen before was very crowded and cramped. It didn’t offer very good options for TV viewing. The couple had one large chair in the kitchen, which is all that would fit. It was not comfortable for both of them since one is tall and one is short. Our solution was to design a custom sectional so we could determine what depths were comfortable for him and for her; AND they would each have a spot to sit and enjoy coffee and the news in the morning!

Next, we selected fabrics that coordinated with the clients’ concept and colors in the kitchen.
